Tampa Bay Buccaneers announce new special teams and offensive line coaches

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have officially filled a couple of key positions on their coaching staff.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers announce new special teams and offensive line coaches

On Thursday, the team announced they had hired Thomas McGaughey as their new special teams coach, as well as Kevin Carberry as their new offensive line coach.

McGaughey comes to the Bucs from the New York Giants, where he spent the last six seasons as New York’s special teams coach. He appears to have had significant success with his kick coverage units in the Big Apple. Per the Bucs’ release, McGaughey’s units finished in the top ten in the league in his six years combined in both opposing kick return and opposing punt return averages. He replaces Keith Armstrong, who retired after five seasons with the Bucs.

Meanwhile, Carberry reunites with new Tampa Bay offensive coordinator Liam Coen, with whom he worked in Los Angeles in 2022 while Coen was the Rams’ offensive coordinator. Carberry served as assistant offensive line coach for the Saints last season. He replaces Joe Gilbert, who left to join Dave Canales’ staff in Carolina.

An improvement from the offensive line as a unit – particularly in run blocking – is a significant concern going into 2024 after the unit produced a league worst 3.4 rushing yards per attempt. The Bucs’ special teams units were also generally underwhelming under Armstrong.

As such, both new coaches will have their work cut out for them when 2024 season prep gets underway.
