Star QB Dak Prescott Might Ditch Cowboys Sooner Than Fans Fear

Quarterback Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys is facing uncertainty regarding a potential contract extension and a reduction in his salary cap figure. Owner Jerry Jones recently made comments suggesting that Prescott may not receive an extension before his current deal expires. Prescott’s existing contract, in its final year, would result in a $59.5 million hit against the team’s salary cap.

Cowboys QB Dak Prescott on upset loss to Cardinals: 'It sucks, it's humbling'

Jones mentioned that an extension for Prescott is not necessary at this moment but is open to coming to an agreement if needed. However, he indicated that the team could continue with the current arrangement if no deal is reached. ESPN’s Dan Graziano doubts that a contract extension for Prescott with the Cowboys is a foregone conclusion, despite it being the ideal way to address his significant cap hit.

There is a risk that Prescott could leave the Cowboys after this season if he is not offered a satisfactory deal. Jones expressed that he is not overly concerned about this outcome, as all players eventually reach the end of their contracts and face uncertainties. Despite an impressive 2022 season where Prescott performed well statistically, leading the league in interceptions but bouncing back with strong numbers, the Cowboys faltered in the playoffs.
