Report: Philadelphia Eagles Are Still Interested In Bill Belichick

The Philadelphia Eagles are reportedly keeping tabs on former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick. The Eagles and Dallas Cowboys were linked to Belichick in January following the NFC East rival’s early postseason exits.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones wanted Belichick over Mike McCarthy for the 2024 season. However, Belichick reportedly didn’t want to deal with the publicity and media that comes with the Cowboys’ job.

The Philadelphia Eagles retained Nick Sirianni for 2024
The Eagles, one year removed from a Super Bowl trip, decided to keep Nick Sirianni for another year. Sirianni’s Eagles were 10-1 at one point in the season before going on to lose six of their final seven games. Sirianni’s seat will be red hot heading into the 2024 season.

Sirianni will have the shadow of a six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach hanging over him.

The Eagles are interested in Bill Belichick for 2025
According to Mike Florio of NBC Sports, a rumor from Boston Sports Journal’s Greg Bedard “meshes” with what Florio was hearing from sources regarding the Eagles’ interest in hiring Belichick:

Publicly, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones hasn’t ruled out hiring free-agent coach Bill Belichick in the future. Privately, the Eagles reportedly haven’t ruled it out either.

Appearing on 98.5 The Sports Hub, Greg Bedard of Boston Sports Journal said that the Eagles could have hired Belichick if things had gone south with Nick Sirianni after the 2023 season — and if they fall apart again in 2024.

“Probably the most interesting thing that I’ve heard, and again this is just Senior Bowl rumor mill, is that the Eagles were very interested in Belichick if things didn’t work out with Nick Sirianni and they could be at the front of the line if things again go poorly for him next year,” Bedard said, via Erin Walsh of Bleacher Report.

Bedard went on to say he believes the Eagles “backchanneled” on Belichick toward the end of the season when the Patriots still employed Belichick. Florio takes Bedard’s comments to mean the Eagles have Belichick in mind for the 2025 season if Sirianni is fired.

Sirianni will need to win quickly next season
If Bedard’s report is accurate, Sirianni is on an extremely short leash to start the season. If Belichick is unemployed (say, Andy Reid doesn’t retire from the Kansas City Chiefs after the Super Bowl), the Eagles might want to fire Sirianni sooner in the season rather than later if they want to hire the highly decorated head coach.
