Panthers ink Derrick Brown to $96 million extension

Panthers reward Derrick Brown with a new contract extension.

The Carolina Panthers are in the middle of rebuilding the roster to help Bryce Young out at quarterback. It’ll be a long road to getting back to contention. However, the front office made a smart move after signing Derrick Brown to a new contract extension.

Brown officially signed a four-year $96 million deal to stay in Carolina, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. $63.165 million is guaranteed.

“Panthers DT Derrick Brown is signing a four-year, $96 million extension that includes $63.165 million guaranteed, per source. Deal negotiated by Brown’s agents Drew Rosenhaus, Jason Rosenhaus, and Robert Bailey and Panthers’ execs Dan Morgan and Brandt Tillis. Drew Rosenhaus confirmed the deal.”

This is a great deal for both the Panthers and Derrick Brown. The star defensive tackle will remain in Carolina for several more seasons. He’ll be a key piece of that defense while the front office rebuilds the roster around him.

Last season, Brown finished with 103 total tackles (career high), two sacks, and an interception. Derrick Brown is elite as a run-stopper and plugs the running lanes often. He’s proven to be one of the more reliable defensive tackles in the league and the Panthers will be set at interior defensive line for years to come.

Panthers 2024 season outlook

2023 was a disaster for the Panthers as everything that could have gone wrong, did. But with a new head coach and general manager, Carolina is hoping to make the necessary improvements for the 2024 season.

The franchise has already improved the wide receiver room after trading for Diontae Johnson from the Pittsburgh Steelers. Having another reliable option should help unlock Bryce Young. Hopefully, the offensive line play improves though, as Young was running for his life more often than not.

It’ll be interesting to see how the defense fares though after the club dished Brian Burns away to the New York Giants. Losing a premiere pass rusher like that isn’t great. However, the Panthers hope to find a new replacement through the NFL Draft or sometime down the road.

Overall, this is a team that’s very much still rebuilding. Expectations should be low, however, improvement needs to be seen. Especially from Bryce Young. If he can at least improve upon last season then the Panthers can set themselves up nicely in the 2025 offseason.

With that said, look for both Bryce Young and Derrick Brown to serve as the center pieces for this Panthers team. Build around those two and Carolina has a chance to get back on top of the NFC South. But it’s going to take sometime unless Young makes vast improvements.
