Packers Pegged To Land 25-Year-Old Super Bowl Champion Defender Amid Jeff Hafley Hire

The Green Bay Packers conducted an overhaul with their defensive coaching staff this off-season.  The Packers will enter the 2024 season with a new defensive coordinator, defensive line coach, and passing game coordinator.

Now the Packers will start to look to revamp their defense on the field.  That may include a Super Bowl champion.

Matt Schneidman of The Athletic highlighted how Jordan Fuller could land with the Packers:

According to Over The Cap, the Packers are about $3 million over the cap. There are plenty of moves they can make to create cap space, most notably the release or trade of left tackle David Bakhtiari, which would free up about $21 million.

A couple of names perhaps to watch? Safety Jordan Fuller, who had three interceptions, three forced fumbles and eight pass breakups in 17 games as a Rams captain last season. He’s 25 years old, played for new Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley at Ohio State in 2019 and probably won’t be too expensive. The Packers might need a veteran inside linebacker, too, assuming they release De’Vondre Campbell.

Guys like Devin White, Josey Jewell and Zach Cunningham are set to be unrestricted free agents. How about cornerback Jeff Okudah? Not necessarily to start, but he’s a 25-year-old former No. 3 pick whom Hafley coached at Ohio State and could help improve Green Bay’s cornerback depth.

It was a great platform season for Fuller as he recorded 94 tackles, three interceptions, and three forced fumbles. His production combined with his ability to keep things in front of him makes him an excellent starter.

Fuller isn’t a ballhawk and lacks the athleticism to truly operate as a single-high player. Despite this, Fuller can continue to earn a living as a capable starter as the league continues to move toward two-high coverage.

Safety is a major question mark for the Green Bay Packers for the second straight season. In 2023, three players started nine or more games at safety, and all are set to become unrestricted free agents. Jonathan Owens, Rudy Ford, and Darnell Savage aren’t under contract for 2024.

However, most teams want some continuity on their roster, regardless of the new defensive scheme brought in by Jeff Hafley.  It will be interesting to see who, if any, rejoin the Packers in 2024 and how the Packers add to the position.
