Assuming the Broncos release Russell Wilson this offseason, the quarterback could turn the tables on Denver, signing with a divisional rival.
An NFC executive told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler he believes the Super Bowl champion will join the Las Vegas Raiders.
“[The Raiders] need a vet, and they are one of Wilson’s original teams he wanted to go to [before Seattle traded him to Denver],” the exec said. “He’d stay in the [AFC West], West Coast, and [Wilson’s wife] Ciara can do a [Las Vegas] residency [as a live performer].”
While Broncos head coach Sean Payton claimed they might keep him, that seems unlikely. Denver benched the nine-time Pro Bowler in Week 17, possibly to avoid activating an injury guarantee ($37M), which becomes his 2025 salary if he’s on the roster next season.
Wilson — who tossed 26 TDs in 15 games — would be an upgrade for Las Vegas. The Raiders benched Jimmy Garoppolo after he threw more interceptions (nine) than TDs (seven) in seven games.
Rookie Aidan O’Connell looked decent but failed to establish himself as the face of the franchise. In 11 games, he threw 12 TDs, seven picks and posted a below-average 40.4 QBR.
The Raiders might want to build around a younger passer instead of banking on a 35-year-old. They have the 13th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, within range to take a QB. USA Today’s Michael Middlehurtz-Schwartz predicted they would select Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy.
However, head coach Antonio Pierce will want to prove he’s the right hire after owner Mark Davis removed his interim tag. It wouldn’t be a total shock if the Raiders took a chance on a veteran QB who could excel with solid wide receivers like Davante Adams and Jakobi Meyers.
