NFL Draft analyst explains why Colts are perfect fit for explosive WR

The Indianapolis Colts have stressed the importance of adding explosiveness to the offensethrough the 2024 NFL Draft, and they should have the chance to add that kind of wide receiver talent when the big weekend arrives.

How the Colts go about the No. 15 overall pick remains to be seen, especially if general manager Chris Ballard wants to trade back. But Pro Football Focus’ Trevor Sikkema explained why he believes the Colts are the perfect fit for LSU’s Brian Thomas Jr.

“Not every wide receiver is as big as he is and runs a 4.33 so he’s an incredible athlete, and we know that. And for that athleticism, I love the Indianapolis Colts,” Sikkema told NFL Network. “This makes a lot of sense to me. You re-signed Michael Pittman Jr. so you’ve got him. I like Josh Downs in the slot. They’re looking for that vertical threat. Anthony Richardson, he’s got a big arm. Let’s use it.”

While the cornerback position may be the bigger need in terms of pure depth, getting Richardson viable targets to work with will be crucial for his development.

As Pittman returns as the alpha making plays in the intermediate parts of the field, and Downs working as a quick safety valve from the slot, adding a vertical threat like Thomas should be considered.

“When it comes to Brian Thomas Jr.’s success this past year, a lot of vertical routes. On just go-routes alone, (he had) over 500 yards, 10 touchdowns and a perfect [158.3] passer rating,” said Sikkema.

Thomas would certainly be an exciting addition to the offense and a perfect complement to Pittman Jr. on the outside so we’ll see in a few weeks if the Colts will have the chance to draft him.
