Kansas City Chiefs Key Free Agency Signing Named 1 of NFL’s Biggest Bargains

The Kansas City Chiefs swung for the fences and landed a dynamic playmaker in free agency, signing Hollywood Brown to drop into quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ prolific supporting cast.

Despite the Chiefs committing only $7 million, and up to $11 million with incentives to Hollywood Brown, the signing has been named one of the NFL’s biggest bargains by Pro Football Focus.

Kansas City Chiefs Key Free Agency Signing Named 1 of NFL’s Biggest Bargains

“The high end of this contract comes in just below PFF’s contract projection,” Gordon McGuinness writes for PFF. “But, the real value for the Chiefs is that they have mitigated their risk against injury by having up to $4 million tied to incentives.

“Brown has earned a PFF receiving grade of 68.0 or better in each of his five NFL seasons. This deal is easy for Chiefs fans to love, especially if they compare it to the three-year, $13 million per year contract signed by Darnell Mooney this offseason.”

It isn’t difficult to imagine Brown elevating Mahomes and the Chiefs’ passing game to new heights, in Kansas City’s quest for a third consecutive Super Bowl championship.

Why Hollywood Brown is an Ideal Fit For Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs Offense
Mahomes didn’t waste any time getting to work with Brown, and the two forging chemistry in the offseason has the potential to lead to explosive production when the 2024 campaign kicks off in September.

Last season, Brown caught 51 of his 94 targets for 574 yards with four touchdowns, and as Pro Football Focus points out, only dropped three passes while averaging a healthy 3.3 yards after the catch per reception.

Brown’s reliable hands and ability to stretch the field vertically gives him the opportunity to capitalize on Mahomes’ deep-ball accuracy and benefit from the opportunities created by All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce in the passing game.

How Much Cap Space do the Kansas City Chiefs Have?
Thanks to Mahomes restructuring his contract with the Chiefs, Veach has plenty of spending flexibility to continue bolstering one of the most talented rosters in the league.

While Veach deserves significant praise for being able to re-sign future Hall of Fame defensive lineman Chris Jones, and at least for the moment, keep L’Jarius Sneed or the window to trade the All-Pro cornerback open via the franchise tag, the Kansas City Chiefs might not be done in free agency.

Even after committing what could become $11 million to Brown, the Kansas City Chiefs still have $4.86 million in effective cap space, and could create more by eventually trading Snead.
