Last season was the first time in a very long time the Kansas City Chiefs were known as a defensive team. Even last year, when they won the Super Bowl over the Philadelphia Eagles, the Chiefs still had the best offense in the league in terms of scoring despite not having a great receiving corps.
This year they had one of the best defenses, if not the best, and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo coached his butt off every single game, earning the title of best coordinator in the league even more than he already had. This offseason, it appears the Chiefs are taking a bit of a different route and making sure they get Patrick Mahomes some help on offense.
As we all know, the Chiefs once had Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce, the best and most dynamic offense in the league. They could attack you from all angles, and the offense was pretty much unstoppable. Hill gave the Chiefs elite speed, whether it be over the middle of the field, in the screen game, or by way of the deep ball. They have missed that since.
Now, with their most recent addition, they could get some of that back. On Thursday, the Kansas City Chiefs signed wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown to a one-year deal worth up to $11 million. Brown was with the Arizona Cardinals the last few years and started his career with the Baltimore Ravens, so he is not new to playing with some of the best quarterbacks in the league.
However, playing with Patrick Mahomes is different, as he can make even the worst wide receivers look good; all they have to do is catch the ball. Luckily, Brown is good at that, and he is also good at using his speed in a very similar way to what Tyreek Hill did for the Chiefs. Is he anywhere near that level of elite? No – Hill will be one of the best receivers we have ever seen by the time it’s said and done.
However, Brown has the speed and versatility the Chiefs need, and the advance stats back up that point. According to NFL Next Gen Stats, Brown has reached 20+ miles per hour on 33 routes since 2020, which is the second-most in the NFL behind Hill.
Marquise Brown has reached 20+ mph on 33 routes since 2020, 2nd-most in the NFL behind former Chief Tyreek Hill.
Brown will look to add speed to a Kansas City wide receiver room that reached 20+ mph on a route just 5 times last season, 6th-fewest in the NFL.#ChiefsKingdom https://t.co/oEdsSMwkBi pic.twitter.com/xlpDxtRxQs

Brown will be able to replace some of the things Hill left behind and do what the Chiefs wanted Mecole Hardman to do but wasn’t able to do. Brown won’t be wide receiver one, as that is Rashee Rice, but he will be a very good wide receiver two and a third option on the team. In an Andy Reid offense, being the third option is not a bad thing at all.
The addition of Marquise Brown is one of the more underrated ones that happened in free agency, and I think we see that very soon.
