The Green Bay Packers showed the NFL that they refuse to enter a rebuild mode after moving on from Aaron Rodgers. Jordan Love and this young Packers offense shocked the NFL world by being one of the four teams left standing in the NFC.
The defense was up and down all year, however, they showed up during the playoffs and played a huge role in the Packers advancing to the divisional round. Now they are expected to retain one of their starters.
The Green Bay Packers Are Expected To Retain One Of Their Starters
Among the Packers’ free agents, Savage is the main one who needs to be re-signed this offseason, according to the 33rd Team:
Darnell Savage has undoubtedly had an up-and-down career for the Green Bay Packers, but his play rose during the playoffs. In the first round of the playoffs, he was all over the field and had an incredible pick-six off Dak Prescott.
The Packers don’t have many unrestricted free agents to worry about, so keeping Savage around for another year or so makes some sense.
It is not guaranteed that Darnell Savage will return to the Green Bay Packers in 2024. In fact, he sounded as though he may be ready to start his next chapter somewhere else after the Packers lost to the 49ers in the NFC divisional round.
“I mean, (are there) frustrations? Yeah, because I know what I am and I know what I can be, you know?” Savage said after the Packers’ loss in the divisional round at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers (via Jason Wilde of Madison.com). “Everybody’s story is different, man. It takes some people longer to get to where they want to go. Me, I don’t think I’ll ever stop growing. I think I’ll always be that way, whether that’s here, whether that’s elsewhere.”
The Packers selected Savage in the first round (21st overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft. Through 72 games, he has recorded nine interceptions, two forced fumbles, and 302 combined tackles.
Also, it doesn’t appear the Packers are willing to invest much in an extension for Savage, but that stance can still change with a long offseason.
