Miami Dolphins sign former Kansas City Chiefs tight end Jody Fortson - The Phinsider

The Kansas City Chiefs have been tinkering at tight end early in free agency, so it’s not all that surprising to see a familiar face leave.

Per NFL reporter Barry Jackson, former Chiefs tight end Jody Fortson has officially found his new home with the Miami Dolphins after signing with the team on Thursday.

Fortson has been a promising project with the Chiefs for the last few years, a clearly talented player with ideal size and hands who had a difficult time staying healthy.

Jody Fortson will reunite with Tyreek Hill in South Florida.

With the Dolphins, Fortson will find a familiar face on the offensive side in wide receiver Tyreek Hill, who was traded to Miami two years ago in a blockbuster deal that brought five draft picks back to Kansas City.

Fortson first came to the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent out of Valdosta State back in 2019. He stood out in rookie minicamp and went on to look solid in the team’s training camp and preseason but spent the first two years with the team on the practice squad. Fortson finally got his first official NFL action in ’21 and caught only five passes that year but two were touchdowns.

Fortson played in 13 games for the Chiefs in 2022, and caught 9 passes for 108 yards and 2 touchdowns. However last season, a shoulder injury landed him on injured reserve and it felt as if the clock had run out on Fortson’s chances with the team.

Earlier this week, the Chiefs brought in a fresh face at the position with the signing of Irv Smith Jr., formerly of the Minnesota Vikings and Cincinnati Bengals.
