The Philadelphia Eagles made a slightly surprising move on Thursday.
According to ESPN’s Field Yates, the team re-signed tight end Albery Okwuegbunam to a one-year deal through 2024.
Okwuegbunam was set to become an unrestricted free agent in March, but that’s no longer the case.
The Eagles have signed TE Albert Okwuegbunam to a new one-year contract through 2024, per source. Albert O was scheduled to become a free agent next month.

Philly initially acquired Okwuegbunam in a trade with the Denver Broncos last August at the conclusion of the preseason. In exchange for the former 2020 fourth-round pick, the Eagles sent a 2025 sixth and seventh-rounder to the Broncos and have yet to get more “bang for their buck” from the deal.
And that’s why the Eagles’ decision to retain him is so odd because he played just 57 (less than five percent) total snaps in 2023.
Okwuegbunam ended up buried on the depth chart at tight end as the Eagles leaned heavily on Dallas Goedert, Grant Calcaterra, and Jack Stoll.
Before coming to the Eagles, Okwuegbunam was relatively productive in Denver, logging 54 catches for 546 yards and four touchdowns through three seasons with the Broncos.
With the Eagles’ revamped coaching staff, there’s a chance that he could play a larger role in 2024 under new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore.
