Chiefs Give 2021 Draft Pick Another Chance to Make Active Roster

On Wednesday, February 21, the Kansas City Chiefs re-signed wide receiver Cornell Powell, according to the NFL’s personnel notice.

#Chiefs signed Cornell Powell to offseason roster

Powell, 26, entered the NFL as a fifth-round pick of the Chiefs in 2021 out of Clemson.

Despite depth at the receiver position being an issue for Kansas City during Powell’s time with the Chiefs, Powell has failed to become a permanent fixture on the active roster. During the 2021 and 2023 seasons, he stayed on the practice squad, and he was active for three games during the 2022 regular season.

In the three games Powell was active, he registered 28 special teams snaps and just three offensive snaps, according to Pro Football Reference.

State of the Chiefs WR Room
Among the top needs heading into the offseason for the two-time defending Super Bowl champions is a wide receiver.

As it stands, tight end Travis Kelce and receiver Rashee Rice are quarterback Patrick Mahomes‘s top targets heading into the 2024 season. Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Kadarius Toney, and Skyy Moore have proven that at best they are complementary pieces of the offense that shouldn’t be relied upon every single week, but rather in specific situations depending on the game plan and/or the matchup.

So, the Chiefs need to add another pass catcher to make their offense more explosive than it was for the majority of the 2023 season.

Luckily for Kansas City, there are lots of options to choose from this offseason, whether it’s in free agency, the draft, or via trade.

Some of the top free agents at receiver this offseason are Mike Evans, Michael Pittman Jr., Marquise Brown, Calvin Ridley, and Curtis Samuel.

The 2024 draft class is deep at wide receiver as well, which will give the Chiefs the chance to draft one at the end of the first round if they so choose to go in that direction.

Twitter/X Chat About Chiefs’ WR Options
Users on X, formerly Twitter, chatted about the options Kansas City has at wide receiver this offseason.

“If the Chiefs aren’t willing to spend big money/trade assets on a big time WR1 this offseason, they may have to take on potential cap casualties WRs that might be a little older but still have plenty left in the tank. Like say, Tyler Lockett,” one user wrote.

“I am aware Veach missed a bit on Skyy & Mecole (though I note they certainly have made contributions), but he nailed it on Rashee Rice,” another user wrote. “A bit of luck goes into this. Hope Veach keeps swinging for WRs in 1st or 2nd round. Good lord imagine this offense with another Rashee Rice.”

“If I were a betting man and had to make a bet right now on the Wide Receiver the Chiefs add in free agency I think I’d bet that Marquise Brown or Gabe Davis is the signing versus the rest of the field,” another user wrote. “Those two just stand out very obviously to me as WRs the Chiefs would target.”

“Here we go again. It’s the offseason where every big name FA, mostly WRs, is going to the #Chiefs, only to go anywhere but the #Chiefs in the end,” another user wrote. “The beautiful thing is that the dynasty proved that they don’t need them so if anything changes & it happens, it’s gravy.”
