Cardinals pick 3 in new mock draft after Patriots take Marvin Harrison Jr.

It is still firmly mock draft season and most things surrounding the Arizona Cardinals are about whether they will draft receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. or trade the pick. What if the Cardinals didn’t even have the opportunity to draft Harrison?

In our most recent first-round mock draft here on Cards Wire, we went with the scenario where the New England Patriots pass on a quarterback.

Why would they do that?

Well, let’s say that Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels are taken with the first two selections and the Pats aren’t that fond of Drake Maye.

Because they have a serviceable starter in Jacoby Brissett, they might want to take the best player in Harrison to have in place so that next year they get a quarterback they like.

That would lead to the following happening.

Cardinals trade fourth pick to Vikings

The Vikings are happy to see Maye available and trade up to get him. They give the Cardinals the 11th and 23rd picks and then a 2025 third-round pick to move up to the fourth pick. It isn’t three first-round picks, but when the prize in Harrison isn’t available, this is nice alternative.

Round 1 (No. 11 overall): Alabama EDGE Dallas Turner

John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

The Cardinals lose out on Harrison and the other two top wideouts in Malk Nabers and Rome Odunze, but the strategy changes. Now they get a big-time pass rusher in Turner, the guy who made GM Monti Ossenfort do a little shimmy dance with his 40 time. The Cardinals desperately need a good pass rusher. While they believe in Zaven Collins, 3.5 sacks isn’t enough in a season.

Round 1 (No. 23 overall): Texas WR Adonai Mitchell

Texas Longhorns wide receivers Adonai Mitchell (5) and Xavier Worthy (1) celebrate a touchdown by Mitchell during the Big 12 Championship game against the Oklahoma State Cowboys at AT&T stadium on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2023 in Arlington.

There are many very good receivers in this draft. Not all are alphas, guys who can be a legit No. 1. The Cardinals need that because their wide receiver room is full of all right players, at best.

Of the guys not named Harrison, Nabers or Odunze, Mitchell looks like the best bet to be an alpha on a team.

Round 1 (No. 27 overall): Alabama CB Kool-Aid McKinstry

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

While the Cardinals might trade the final pick if they end up with three first-round selections, here taking McKinstry makes sense. They address all three of their greatest needs with first-round talents.
