Cleveland Browns DE Myles Garrett put it all together in 2023 and it paid off for him in a big way.
Garrett won his first Defensive Player of the Year award after another very disruptive year.
In the process, Garrett beat out Micah Parsons, Daron Bland, Maxx Crosby, and T.J. Watt. The final name still seems to be having a tough time accepting that he didn’t win the award.
“I don’t have a problem with any players,” Watt explained. Everybody’s phenomenal. Myles, Micah [Parsons], they’re great players, don’t get me wrong. It’s just that the voting, I want more clarity on how it all comes about,” Watt said on a recent episode of Pardon My Take.
Watt had 19 sacks and Garrett finished with 14. It goes deeper than that though, as Garrett was the leader on what was one of the best defenses in the NFL. The NFL recognizes Garrett as the toughest defender to game plan for and that is on record by many around the league.
“I don’t want any of it to come across as whining or complaining it’s just the matter of fact,” Watt explained. “You work so hard and when you’re not able to come away from a season with a Super Bowl you like to fall back on something.”
It likely hurts a bit more for Watt since the award went to a divisional rival. Watt has one DPOY award to his name already and is certainly one of the best pass rushers this game has seen recently.
