ESPN insider believes Packers ‘could make a run’ at recently-released Pro Bowl safety

The Green Bay Packers could enter the free agency market for a veteran safety.

Green Bay Packers

Darnell Savage, Jonathan Owens, and Rudy Ford have expiring contracts and can sign elsewhere at the start of the new league year next week. The Packers have a significant need at the position, and with NFL Combine results potentially taking a top draft target off the board, Brian Gutekunst may need to make a move in free agency.

Green Bay has made moves to clear cap space over the past week, a clear sign the team is gearing up for potential incomings in the near future.

With free agency nearing, potential safety targets are coming into focus, including a recently-released Pro Bowler.

Packers linked to three-time Pro Bowler Quandre Diggs in free agency

The Seattle Seahawks have released three-time Pro Bowl safety Quandre Diggs in a cap-saving move, and ESPN’s Rob Demovsky believes the Packers “could make a run” for the veteran.

Diggs recently turned 31 but is only one season removed from his third straight Pro Bowl selection with the Seahawks.

The former sixth-round pick spent the past five seasons in Seattle, making 324 tackles, 32 pass defenses, and 18 interceptions, including one pick-six.

The concern for the Packers is that Diggs is coming off a challenging season. According to Pro Football Reference, he tied a career-worst 13 missed tackles while allowing a passer rating of 103.9 in his coverage. His 55.4 PFF coverage grade was among the worst in the league at the position.

Diggs enters his age-32 season in 2024, and the Packers may prefer to go in another direction.

As always in free agency, it comes down to talent, fit in the system, and price. If Diggs is available on a short-term, team-friendly deal, the Packers could bring him in to provide depth and compete for a starting job.

Whether they offer Diggs a deal or not, his release gives the Packers another option in free agency.
