Russell Wilson has looked to be on his way out of Denver even since he was benched for the final stretch of the Broncos’ 2023-24 season.

Denver finished 7-8 under Wilson this past season, and with $37M of his 2025 contract becoming fully guaranteed on March 17 — it’s looking increasingly likely that the two sides as moving toward a split sooner rather than later.

“All signs continue to point to the Denver Broncos and Russell Wilson divorcing this upcoming week,” NFL insider Adam Schefter revealed on SportsCenter on Saturday morning. “And if and when that were to happen, Russell Wilson would hit the free agent market and no team would have to compensate the Denver Broncos, and there’s some question as to whether they’d have to compensate Russell Wilson because his money would be guaranteed for the upcoming season any way that Denver will be paying.

“So, whereas some of these other quarterbacks like a Kirk Cousins, like a Baker Mayfield would come with a high price tag, the same might not be true of Russell Wilson. That would be one of the elements that makes him particularly attractive as he will look to find a new home out of Denver away from the Broncos.”

In total, Denver owes Wilson $39 million in guarantees for this upcoming season as part of his five-year, $242.6 million contract that he signed back in 2022.

For the Broncos, holding onto Wilson would mean vesting $37 million for 2025. This time next year, if Denver cuts Wilson after the season they will face dead money charges of $85 million over the next two seasons combined. Those numbers will likely be a major deciding factor for the two parties’ impending divorce, and in turn, could give another team a Super Bowl-winning quarterback with a lower price tag.

This past season, Wilson completed 66.4% of his passes, with 3,070 yards and 26 touchdowns compared to eight interceptions. He was also the NFL‘s seventh rated passer at the time he was benched.

Throughout his career, Wilson has passed for 43,653 yards and 334 touchdowns on a 64.7% completion percentage.

Predictions for Russell Wilson’s eventual next landing spot has been speculated to range from teams within the Broncos’ AFC West, to as even the Pittsburgh Steelers and Atlanta Falcons, among others. For Denver, there’s no set plan for its next move under center but the 2024 NFL Draft is a likely where the Broncos will start.
