Ex-Eagles QB coach Alex Tanney quickly finds new, yet familiar home

The Philadelphia Eagles fired quarterbacks coach Alex Tanney last week but it didn’t take him long to find a new and familiar home.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Indianapolis Colts are hiring Tanney for their offensive staff.

He will reunite with former Eagles offensive coordinator and current Colts head coach Shane Steichen.

Tanney worked under Steichen in Philly for two seasons (2021-22) as an offensive quality control coach and assistant quarterbacks coach.

He was promoted to the Eagles quarterback coach ahead of the 2023 season.

Jalen Hurts did not live up to his 2022 MVP-caliber season this past year, though many blame that on offensive coordinator Brian Johnson rather than Tanney.

The Eagles started the season 10-1 before losing six of their final seven matchups, including a 32-9 playoff loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

While Hurts didn’t lead a Super Bowl run, he still played at an elite level, completing 65.4 percent of his passes for 3,858 yards with 23 touchdowns. He also added 15 more scores on the ground, breaking Cam Newton’s 2011 record of 14.

The Colts already have a quarterbacks coach in Cam Turner, so Tanney’s role in Indy is to be determined at the moment.

As for the Eagles, they hired Doug Nussmeier as their new quarterbacks coach.

Nussmeier previously worked closely with Kellen Moore at the Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Chargers.
